The problems this solves

What fixed cover solves for tractors.

01

Older tractors

Tractors up to 40 years old can be covered, new or used. Older equipment is often harder to insure on an annual policy.

02

Conditional registration

Many tractors run on conditional registration for limited road access. In NSW that allows farming and farming contracting, roadside mowing, and roadworks and earthworks, with no freeway or motorway use. In Victoria the operator must belong to an approved operator group. In South Australia, special purpose vehicles can be registered for any 3-month period up to 36 months, with conditions such as daylight travel only, speed or distance limits and warning signs. The indication asks whether your tractor is unregistered, conditionally registered or fully registered, and all three can be covered.

03

Used part of the year

South Australia offers seasonal registration for vehicles used part of the year, such as a farm truck at harvest, renewable for 3, 6 or 9 months for heavy vehicles. A fixed multi-year premium is set on day one and isn’t re-rated, through busy and quiet months alike.

04

Business use, not hobby farms

Cover is for tractors used wholly or predominantly in a business with an ABN. Tractors used mainly for private purposes aren’t covered.

05

One premium through good seasons and bad

The premium is set on day one and isn’t affected by claims, inflation or market movements for the term you choose.

How much does tractor insurance cost?

It depends on your state, the tractor, its value, the term and its registration. As a guide, the four real five-year premiums we publish, on two excavators, a truck trailer and a telehandler, range from 3.1% to 7.9% of the insured value over five years, about 0.6% to 1.6% a year. Can I insure a conditionally registered tractor?

Yes. Unregistered, conditionally registered and fully registered tractors can all be covered.

Can I insure an older tractor?

Yes. Tractors up to 40 years old can be covered, new or used.

Is a tractor on a hobby farm covered?

No. Cover is for tractors used wholly or predominantly in a business, so you need an ABN.

Why fixed

Priced once.
Not every year.

A standard annual policy is re-rated at every renewal for claims, inflation and market changes. A multi-year policy sets the price for the whole term on day one.

Annual policy

Re-rated yearly

Four renewals, four re-ratings. Bar heights are illustrative, not real premiums.

Fixed multi-year policy

Locked on day one

One price for the term you choose, set on day one and never re-rated. The bars show the insured value: 100% in years 1 and 2, then a 10% depreciation each year from year 3.

In the five years to June 2026, insurance prices paid by Australian households rose 47.9%, about double the 24.1% rise in all prices (ABS). Why premiums keep rising.
